The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that Opioids (prescription opioids,
heroin and fentanyl) killed more than 42,000 people in 2016 in the United States. The Agency
for Healthcare Research and Quality reports that between 2005 and 2014 the national rate of
opioid-related inpatient stays increased 64.1 percent and the national rate of opioid-related
emergency department (ED) visits increased by 99.4 percent. The prevalence of opioid
addiction has risen most recently to the level of a healthcare crisis. The healthcare community
and elected officials are equally involved with leading the search for solutions.

    Topics for Discussion:
? Overall prevalence of the opioid use/miss-use in the community
? Clinical and business rationale for addressing the opioid issue
? Call to action related to developing unique models to address the opioid issue for the
    healthcare organization and community
? Physician-involvement and issues of overprescribing pain medication and prescription
? Patient care solutions – treatment guidelines (screening) and alternatives to managing
? Community involvement and creating collaborative partnerships/resources
? Supportive housing and recovery issues
? Management of information and electronic medical/health record
? Immediate and long-term strategies to address opioid addiction in community
? Advocacy-related action (state and local) and prevention strategies
    ? Workforce, patient and care-giver education/training
? Managing secondary and vicarious trauma for caregivers and first responders

We are currently coordinating for two more panel members. If you know a dynamic senior
healthcare executive, a clinical leader such as a CMO or CNO, and/or a Senior-level leader in public
health who has worked on models to address the opioid crisis, please contact NCHE Director of
Programs, Chuck Unruh at [email protected]
